Porcelain: The cache of Italian Porcelana with workhorse function

Porcelain is composed of a very fine, non-porous clay called kaolin. The composition also includes some sand and glass and is fired at a higher temperature. This makes it ultra-strong, heavier, and denser, especially appropriate as tile flooring for busy, highly trafficked rooms.

Porcelain is always waterproof, whether or not it’s glazed. It can also be used outside. It’s not uncommon to see it on deck and patio floors, as well as poolside. It can also be used on walls and shower/tub surrounds.

Right now, the trend is currently for large tiles and this large-format one answers that trend. It is available in a range of sizes and can be as large as 24 X 24. It's also available in an overwhelming number of colors, patterns, and designs. Many people prefer porcelain as a stone tile since the large format gives it more of a look of quarried slabs.

Ceramic tile: Highly decorative

These tiles are also very tough. Especially when glazed, they have a hard outer surface that makes them almost impossible to break. While breakage isn’t common, if it does happen, you just replace the tile, not the entire floor.

These tiles should be used indoors. We see them not only on floors but also on backsplashes, accent walls, borders, and accent pieces. It's important to remember that the word "ceramic" refers to any material made from clay, including mosaics, subway tiles, terracottas, and porcelain.
